Why are some horses track specialists?

Why do some tracks produce nightmare results for punters?

Why do some tracks favour leaders?

These answers and more can be found in our descriptions of Australia's main horse racing tracks.

Victoria Park has an inner track which links up with the original track at the 1400 metres and 450 metres sections. The main track has a circumference of 2,360 metres with a 601 metres straight.

The inner track is 1,960 metres with a straight 428 metres long. A chute extends off the main straight with 900 metres and 1000 metres races having a straight run to the winning post.

In the straight sprints when the track is rain affected the outside rail is usually the better going.

Victoria Park is an easy, undulating track. The home straight, the longest in Australia, gives run on horses every chance, but front runners and on pace horses also do very well.

Barrier Guide

1000 metres: This barrier is located in a chute at the end of the home straight. Like Flemington it is a straight run to the winning post. The inside tends to be favoured when the track is rated Good. When it is Slow or Heavy the outside barriers are usually best.

1450 metres:
Situated on the course proper in the back of the straight. There is a straight run of only about 200 metres to the sweeping turn. Inside barriers are a significant advantage. The 1500 metres start with only 250 metres to the sweeping turn also heavily favours horses drawn well.

1600 metres:
Similar to the 1400 metres start, situated on the course proper in the back of the straight. There is a straight run of 350 metres to the sweeping turn. Inside barriers have an advantage.

1800 metres:
Similar to the 1600 metres start, situated on the course proper in the back of the straight. There is a straight run of 550 metres to the sweeping turn. Inside barriers have a slight advantage.

2000 metres:
This barrier is located in a chute off the course proper in the back of the straight. There is a straight run of 750 metres to the sweeping turn. Inside barriers have a slight advantage.

2600 metres: This barrier starts in the home straight near the finishing line. There is only a run of about 200 metres to the first sweeping turn. Inside barriers have a significant advantage.

3200 metres: This barrier is located in a chute near the end of the home straight before the 900 metres start. A very fair start, there is a very good, straight run to the first turn.
