Why are some horses track specialists?

Why do some tracks produce nightmare results for punters?

Why do some tracks favour leaders?

These answers and more can be found in our descriptions of Australia's main horse racing tracks.

Eagle Farm racecourse is controlled by the Queensland Turf Club.

It has a circumference of 2,027 metres with a straight 434 metres long.

There are two large, gradual sweeping turns. This makes good barrier positions very important for leaders and on pace runners.

The long, spacious straight helps horses that run on from the rear of the field.

Barrier Guide

1000 metres: This barrier is located in a chute off the course proper with a straight run of 400 metres to the sweeping double turn for home home turn. Inside barriers have an advantage.

1200 metres:
Situated on the course proper with an angled run of only 180 metres to the sweeping double turn . Inside barriers have a significant advantage.

1400 metres:
This barrier is also situated on the course proper, with an angled run of 380 metres to the sweeping double turn. Inside barriers have the advantage.

1600 metres:
Similar to the 1200 metres and 1400 metres starts, this barrier is also situated on the course proper, with an angled run of 580 metres to the sweeping double turn. Inside barriers have an advantage.

1800 metres: This barrier starts in the middle of the turn into the back straight which is located just past the finishing post. Inside barriers have a very big advantage.

2200 metres: This barrier is situated on the course proper in the home straight only 200 metres from the winning post and the first sweeping turn. Inside barriers have a significant advantage, as they also do from the 2100 metres start which is only 100 metres from the winning post.

3200 metres: The Brisbane Cup start. Starts at the 1200 metres start the first time around. Situated on the course proper with an angled run of only 180 metres to the first sweeping double turn. Inside barriers have a significant advantage. If there is a big field there is nothing worse than being caught wide early in a 3200 metres race.
