Why are some horses track specialists?

Why do some tracks produce nightmare results for punters?

Why do some tracks favour leaders?

These answers and more can be found in our descriptions of Australia's main horse racing tracks.

Canterbury is the Sydney Turf Club's second racecourse.

The circumference of the track is 1,579 metres with the straight only 317 metres long.

Because it is a small saucer-shaped course with sharp turns it suits short striding gallopers.

It is best suited to horses that begin fast and can hold a forward position all the way. Barrier one is very important.

Long striding horses or horses that get well back in the field often find it hard to win. This clearly means Canterbury is a specialists' track.
