Computer help (again)

can anyone help, I cleaned up my sons laptop, but unfortunately must have done something wrong as can't seem to use the internet, the icon says that I am connected but when I try to connect to any site I get "unable to connect to internet" following the prompts I get an error message "ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED any advice appreciated.

Also getting a caption:C:\Windows\system32\SecureAssist.dll

Try unticking the use proxy option in browser options. Either that or it had a proxy file that you deleted and you need to recreate it or recover it.

Specifically try:

Go to settings > Advanced > Network > Click "Change Proxy Settings"

In the dialog box, click "LAN Settings" button > Untick "Use a proxy server for your LAN"

Also untick in IE.

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.
  • Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
  • Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
  • Select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box to make sure its unticked.

UB got into IE following your instructions, the Proxy box was unticked. Looks like its worse than I thought as one of those captions has "Snapdo exe -Bad Image" which doesn't sound good and don't ask me he managed it but the D drive is full, and I mean FULL do you think its a lost cause?

If you have backups go do a restore.

If you don't then its hard without being at the computer.

Snapdo exe is a browser hijacker, should not be there in the first place.

Apart from that as UB said it's hard to help to fix such a massive problem by remote.
Local help? maybe Shaun, he is located in WA at least it's the same state?

Thanks all, yes I thought it was hard to fix. UB I tried a restore but most of the dates are BACKUP, and when I try, I get " you are trying to restore from a backup, pick another restore date" but there isn't any prior to the problem date (except those listed as backup) ? What puzzles me is that there was a Windows up-date, so it is definitely connected to the net, but I can't use it?

If it's a brand name laptop (or even if it isn't) there is hidden reset partition on the hard drive from where you can do a factory reset. Google the key press sequence you have to use to get to the reset option on start up. It varies from brand to brand. Note that you lose everything!!!!

A system restore should not have a "backup" it simply has a date of the restore point.
