Facts & Tips
Betting facts from W. S. Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley, Saturday, 24th. October.
It was yet another training triumph for the legendary Bart Cummings, winning the Cox Plate with the 3YO colt So You Think. The colt led all the way and won by 2.5 lengths like an odds on good thing, not a horse starting at $14.00! What was even more amazing was that this colt had only raced four times before the Cox Plate.
It was a bookmakers’ nightmare at Moonee Valley. Favourites won six of the nine races, including the first four of the day. Then because of the Bart Cummings factor So You Think was well supported in the Cox Plate by many punters. Punters who level staked each favourite at starting price with just $10 bets made a profit of $150.50 from the nine races. Any punter who went all up on the favourites in the first four races starting with $10.00 could have turned that $10 into $1,330.00.
Damien Oliver rode a double on Sublimity, $4.80 and Apache Cat, $3.40, while Luke Nolen rode a double on Avenue, $1.65 and Hanks, $9.00..
Betting facts from Caulfield Cup Day, Saturday, 17th. October.
Luke Nolen and Hugh Bowman both rode doubles. Nolen’s winners were Sublimity, $9.00 and Typhoon Tracy, $3.90. Hugh Bowman’s winners were Run For Naara $7.50 and Seeking Attention, $6.50.
Damien Oliver’s many followers didn’t have much fun. The day started with Oliver giving his many fans a run for their money on Azwa, $12.00, which was only beaten by 1.5 lengths, though it finished fifth. Oliver then finished third on Bawaardi, $3.80 second favourite, in a field of 6; then a well beaten last by 18 lengths on rank outsider Iquit, which lived up to its name. Then in the Caulfield Cup, on equal second favourite Cima De Triomphe, Oliver came in thirteenth, eight lengths from the winner, Viewed.
But what a training triumph for 81 year old Bart Cummings. Bart Cummings won the Melbourne Cup with Viewed last year and has backed up with Viewed winning the Caulfield Cup in the following year and one of the favourites to win this year's Melbourne Cup. The Bart Cummings trained Roman Emperor also ran second in the Caulfield Cup and is also considwered a big chance in the Melbourne Cup!
In the race following the Caulfield Cup Oliver finished fourth on $5.50 second favourite Eagle Falls. Punters who then tried to “get out” by backing Oliver on $4.60 second favourite Solchow in the last found they got in even deeper as it was beaten by 2.5 lengths, even though it finished second.
Betting facts from Caulfield, Saturday, 10th. October.
Punters who system bet based upon backing favourites in the early races had a field day at Caulfield. What an amazing start to Caulfield Guineas Day. The first three favourites, King Pulse $3.10, Maxisun $4.80 and Avenue at $2.50 all won. Then in R5 Whobegotyou won at $2.15. Bookies were copping an absolute hiding but managed to fight back in the biggest betting races. Allez Wonder won the Toorak Handicap starting at $41.00 followed by the hot $3.10 favourite, Denman, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, finishing a miserable seventh in the Caulfield Guineas. That race was easily won by Starspangledbanner, $13.00, well ridden by Danny Nikolic, who led all the way and outsmarted the other jockeys. Our Lona, $19.00, also won R9 to complete the bookies’ fightback.
