31/1/2003 edition Sky Racing: 4. Two minutes before the fifth at Eagle Farm Sky
Racing crossed over to racecaller Alan Thomas who described the the horses
going into the barriers. Straight after his call of the race, which
was won by Prince Clang, Sky went back to Jo McKinnon in the studio.
She said, "See, looks don't matter."
Wrong. Of course looks matter. Horses are equine athletes. Just as it's important for athletes to look fit if they are going to perform anywhere near their best, so looks are important for our horse athletes. What horse would you prefer to back? One that looks fit, alert and calm and has a shiny coat or a horse that looks fat and is sweating up? It is just not correct to say that "looks don't matter". Of course some horses look more regal than others, some horses look quite plain, but looks with regard to fitness do matter. They always have and they always will.
