31/1/2003 edition Sky Racing: 2. 13 minutes before the third at Eagle Farm, Jo McKinnon read the Sky top four ratings for that race. She noted "Double Dazzle on top" which was showing $17.00 on the tote. Based on the Sky ratings, at around those odds of $17.00 Double Dazzle was huge value for a top selection. No mention of that by Jo McKinnon who then turned to the tote prices, saying, "The main chances are" followed by reading the prices of the shortest priced tote horses. Double Dazzle did not get a mention. Ratings are designed to find horses over the odds. When Jo McKinnon saw the Sky top rater as $17.00 should have indicated that it was a "value" Sky ratings top selection. But her reading of the Sky ratings and the tote prices were done in complete isolation of each other. Plenty of tote punters must have followed the Sky ratings.
Double Dazzle ended up only paying $9.30 on the tote - but won. A good
hit by the Sky ratings. But Jo McKinnon made no mention of that. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?

is just about impossible to get a high enough
strike rate backing short priced tote favourites
and the poor value tote horses to make up for
the big unders on the tote. Short
