30/7/2011 edition How To Make Money on Horse Racing Betting Trifectas Trifectas - win with favourites! As a general rule once a horse is a favourite on the tote it will destroy your trifecta. However, if you are selective, it is still possible to make money taking a trifecta betting the horse that is the favourite to win. You must also know that just about every other tote trifecta punter will have the horse to win. So if you are going to have any chance of getting value, the horses that finish second and third must not be the same horses that most of other tote punters will include. Basically what you are really aiming to do is taking a quinella for second and third rather than a quinella for first and second! So you should avoid the really small fields - seven horses and less. The smaller the field, the more likely most punters will have gone favourite to win with the field for second and the field for third. In the second race at Eagle Farm last Saturday, a 16 horse race, the $4.60 starting price favourite Biggles won. It paid $4.40 on the SuperTab tote. Peppered Black finished second and paid $10.10 for the place on the tote. Clearly, it was not a popular pick with tote punters. Denwood, which started at $6.00, finished third and paid $2.40 for the place. Importantly the $5.00 second favourite, Tehuti, missed a place. The trifecta paid $946.30 on the SuperTab tote. Remember, the most important rule to give yourself a chance to win long term playing trifectas is to have different trifecta combinations from the majority of tote players. If the way you take your trifecta combinations and the horses you include are what the majority of tote punters do, then you will get their long term results, which is a loss of about 20% on turnover. But by being smart and sensibly selecting the races you bet in, it is possible to take short priced winners and tote favourites with horses for second and third that most tote punters dismiss. By doing that you will have an excellent chance of winning money over the long term wagering trifectas.
