30/5/2003 edition Betting Tips to Save Money Adelaide middle distance and distance races Once races are 1800 metres or more pace becomes very important. You won't find a horse leading the field by 10 lengths in a 1200 metres race, but this can happen over a 2000 metres race. The skill of the jockeys becomes very important. At times you'll find a bolter lead by lengths and steal a race because no jockey made a move early enough. They just assumed the leader would come right back to the field. When you have inferior, inconsistent horses and slightly less skilled jockeys, as is usually the case in Adelaide then you have a poisonous cocktail for betting. Take the case of the last race of the day at Victoria Park last Saturday, a restricted event with 13 runners over 1800 metres. 4YO gelding Above All had been sent out favourite at his last two starts at Pioneer Park. On April 26, over 1900 metres, he finished last of 11, beaten by over 26 lengths. Then on May 3, again over 1900 metres, he finished fifth of six, beaten by over 22 lengths. Above All then came out and ridden by promising Adelaide apprentice Matthew Neilson won by two lengths over 1800 metres at Victoria Park. He started at $51.00 and paid up to $75.30 on the tote.
