We make this point every year at Carnival times. Punters flock to back their home state horses when they compete against the best from around the country.

Queensland filly Calaway Gal paid $15.10 for her Golden Slipper win on the Victorian and New South Wales totes. She started at $14.00 in the bookmakers' betting ring. But by comparison she paid a miserable $9.50 on the Queensland tote. Those loyal Queenslanders won $56 less for every $10 win bet they placed on the Queensland filly.

Your home state tote usually repays loyalty to your local horses racing interstate by slashing the dividends you get if you win. Plenty of punters will reply with, "What's wrong? It's better backing Calaway Gal and getting $9.50 than backing another horse and losing the bet."

Of course it is. But that is missing the point. As punters we need to aim to get the best betting odds we can. It is hard enough backing winners at decent odds without taking massive unders on them. There is no refund on losing bets so it is essential to squeeze every cent out of the odds when we back a winner. It is just not possible to stay in front if big unders are obtained on winning bets.
