Betting After The Spring Carnival

Caution needed

It's not only major track changes which can lead to upset results. After a major carnival has ended and the ordinary horses return, upsets can also be the order of the day. Race selection becomes very important.

Have a look at these upset winners at Caulfield from last Saturday, the first Saturday after the Spring Carnival ended.

El Maze $12.00, tote $13.30
Largo $21.00, tote $36.70
Marbine $21.00, tote $19.40
Wild Rapid $20.00, tote $27.60

With Largo, Marbine and Wild Rapid winning the last three races of the day, most punters ended the day on a dismal note.

It's not as if all these horses were simply over the odds. For example, 5YO mare Largo had the grand total of four wins from 31 starts and at her previous two starts - her first runs this campaign had finished 12/16 and 15/16, beaten by a total of 17 lengths. It was reasonable to expect some improvement - but she won like a good thing, by 3.5 lengths.
