27/9/2002 edition

Jockey Watch

Kerrin McEvoy had more than a day out at the big Caulfield meeting last Sunday. He rode an amazing four winners in the first five races of the eight race meeting. They were:

Venus Was Her Name $12.80
Taimana $17.00
Great Glen $33.40
Pernod $17.00

Before anyone starts rushing out to back more of McEvoy's rides it is worth carefully noting his losing ride in the third race, on Innovation Girl, a very short priced $2.50 favourite. That ride should not be ignored and pushed aside in the hype.

Innovation Girl started from barrier 10 in the field of 13 in this Group 3 3YO Fillies set weights and penalties event over 1400 metres. She also had equal top weight of 57.5kg.

Kerrin McEvoy had bad luck on Innovation Girl. She was posted three wide on the speed without cover and naturally weakened out of it near the end of the race. Kerrin McEvoy does put in some excellent rides. That's why he is put on good horses by good trainers. But it also pays to look at Kerrin McEvoy's overall average winning strike rate.

You can also assess jockeys by their rides on horses from wide barriers and the amount of bad luck jockeys have. Compare McEvoy with Damien Oliver and other competent jockeys, many of whom are pretty much ignored by the media. Then decide whether a jockey's horses which start wide remain wide. Also decide whether a jockey has more than his fair share of bad luck during races.

You Need Top Odds

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites and the poor value tote horses to make up for the big unders on the tote.

If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.

Short priced tote favourites
are losing bets.
