25/10/2002 edition Carnival Horseracing Tips Below are some horses whose runs were worth noting from Caulfield last Saturday: Beekeeper was noticed making up good ground late in the Caulfield Cup to finish sixth, less than two lengths behind the winner, Northerly. This lightly raced Godolphin owned horse has been set for the Melbourne Cup and will be fitter for the run. Gwendolyn was unable to get a clear run for most of the straight in the Group 3 Tristarc Stakes run over 1400 metres. When finally clear she finished well for seventh. The same thing happened first up on September 14. She came out and won her next race two weeks later at big double figure odds. Hierogram won the 3YO Fillies Open over 2000 metres with plenty in reserve. Could John Hawkes have yet another Oaks winning filly? Platinum Scissors was outstanding, winning the 3YO
Group 2 Norman Robinson Stakes over 2000 metres. He had top weight of
57.5kg. and was wide throughout. This Gai Waterhouse trained colt looks
sure to make the Derby very interesting. Strategic Image again had no luck, being badly held up in the straight. He is very smart. Zip Zip Aray, the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap winner, has come back well from a spell. He was noticed making up good ground. Cosmic Strike was there with a big show in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint run over 1100 metres. This 4YO mare was checked out of the race at the 200. Natural Blitz again had no luck. In the 3YO Listed Gothic Stakes, run over 1400 metres, he was checked out of the race at the 600 when Chowpie broke down badly and didn't finish. Koala was very unlucky in the same race. He was right in the thick of things but got checked on the home turn and was then badly held up for a run and shuffled back through the field. Stormy's Son was also unlucky in the same race. He was checked and trapped without a run behind the leading bunch in the straight. He did well to finish third. River Dove was first up and put in a run worth noting. After settling well back in the field, jockey Kerrin McEvoy had difficulty getting a clear run in the straight. The 4YO mare finished off the 1100 metres fillies and mares sprint well for fifth. is just about impossible to get a high enough
strike rate backing short priced tote favourites
and the poor value tote horses to make up for
the big unders on the tote. Short
