24/10/2003 edition Gai Waterhouse's Caulfield Cup Day Gai Waterhouse had three runners in the Caulfield Cup field of 18. Here are the results. Platinum Scissors Grand Armee Sunday Joy You can't do much worse than that. The previous Wednesday in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas 3YO filly Shamekha was sent out at $5.00, raced erratically, weakened and finished tenth of the 11 runners. The filly was found to be suffering from thumps, but that's hardly any comfort to all the punters who backed the filly only to be beaten out of sight. Gai Waterhouse may have an outstanding strike rate in Sydney, but when she brings horses to Melbourne there has just been one flop after another. She seems to be reduced from a super trainer in Sydney to the ranks of a battling trainer in Melbourne and most of her horses race accordingly. Gai Waterhouse did have one very big hard luck story on Saturday. In the Group 3 Coongy Handicap her $6.00 second favourite So Assertive looked like it would have won with a clear run in the straight. But then there were also numerous other hard luck stories in that race like C'Est Le Reve, Irish Crusader and the $5.00 favourite, Legible. Until Gai Waterhouse shows she can bring horses to Melbourne for Carnival racing and start winning with some reasonable level of consistency it is probably best to steer well clear of her horses. Murphy's Law seems to apply when Gai Waterhouse brings horses to Melbourne. Whatever can go wrong usually does go wrong. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
