23/8/2002 edition Plunge Horses Each week we will feature tables showing just how successful the "smart money" was. To qualify a horse must have firmed 5% in the betting market. For example if a horse was backed in from $5.00 (4/1 or 20%) to $4.00 ( 3/1 or 25%) it will qualify. Odds calculator gives you tables. The jockeys and trainers are also important. You may see some jockeys and trainers consistently bringing home plunges whereas others regularly fail to deliver.
A very unpleasant day for the bookies with the big plunges coming off. It's the occasional days like that which lead the media "experts" to tell you to follow the money. Also, unlike the totes, punters get the odds they bet with the bookies, not the final odds. Unlike the totes the bookmakers don't finalise the odds they pay after all bets are made, guaranteeing themselves a significant profit every race. That is what the totes do. But bookmakers often lose on a race when a successful plunge comes off. That is why a horse can only be plunged with bookmakers and never on the tote. When a horse is plunged with the bookies, tote punters usually end up taking the shortest odds and often well below the shortest plunged bookmaker betting ring odds. This edition of Punt to Win: Warning It is just about
impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short
priced tote favourites to make up for the big unders on
the tote. Short priced tote
