23/5/2003 edition Betting Tips Heavy tracks Betting on Heavy tracks can be very risky. It is particularly risky if there are horses without Heavy track form in the race. Horses that can win on a Slow track do not necessarily handle Heavy tracks. Have a look at some examples from the Rosehill meeting last Saturday on a Heavy track: 1. Yorkshire Lass, with only three wins from 29 starts, was sent out as $4.00 favourite in a weak mares restricted race over 1400 metres, on the strength of one third from one start on a Heavy track. Yorkshire Lass finished out of a place, beaten by nearly five lengths. All Elegance started at $5.50 and finished down the track in the same race. The mare had one second from her only start on a Slow track but had never raced on a Heavy track. The winner, Luskin L'Etoile, $13.00, had only won twice from 20 starts. One of those wins was a Gosford maiden by nearly three lengths on a Heavy track. 2. In the last race of the day, a restricted event over 1200 metres, Western Tycoon was solidly backed from $4.00 and sent out a short $3.20 favourite. Nine days earlier the 4YO gelding won a Gosford Open over 1000 metres on a Heavy track by over two lengths. However Western Tycoon had only placed once from four starts over 1200 metres. The gelding's two wins were over 1000 metres. After the race Western Tycoon's jockey Rod Quinn told stewards that while he did not blame the Heavy track, he felt that Western Tycoon had not run the 1200 out on the Heavy track. the gelding finished 11 of 12, beaten by 10 lengths. If a horse has distance queries, a Heavy track will find it out, even if it has handled a Heavy at a shorter distance. The race was won by Flash Phantom at a starting price of $21.00. The 7YO gelding was first up, down in the weights, but had never officially raced on a Slow or a Heavy rated track in his 20 races career. The more unknown factors in a race, the more risky betting in the race can be. Punters made the natural assumption that Flash Phantom couldn't handle the track conditions - how wrong they turned out to be. This edition of Punt to Win: You Need Top Odds It
