Horse Racing Form Analysis and Betting Tips

Eleven form analysis and betting traps to avoid.

We remember talking to a punter years ago who said our selections were not returning a profit. Politely asked if he backed a top rated horse that won the previous week, he replied, "No. I missed that one. I didn't think it could win." It won at $33.00. We replied that our selections were returning a profit.

The simple fact is that like most punters he got put off by the odds. If that horse had been $3.00 instead of $33.00 then he would have backed it!

The problem was that he was not backing some of the winners at good odds and in addition also staking erratically, putting more money on some of the shorter priced horses plus increasing wagers after losing bets.

Many punters ruin their ability to bet winners at good odds and instead find a horse to back at poor value odds by accepting any number of the following cliched "betting rules."

Start querying them and you'll be surprised how you'll have a completely different perspective when you do your form for a race and you'll also have a serious chance of backing plenty of winning horses that most punters dismiss outright.

1. It's carrying too much weight to win.

2. It can't possibly win from that barrier.

3. It can't beat the favourite.

4. But it hasn't won at this distance.

5. I know it won last start but it's up in class here.

6. It finished too far from the winner at its last start.

7. "Who" did you say was riding it?

8. I've never heard of that trainer.

9. Look at the money for it. This horse can't lose.

10. If it was a real winning chance, it wouldn't be at those odds. Something must be wrong.

11. Look at it ease in the betting. It can't possibly win.
