20/2/2004 edition Jockey Horse Combinations Jim Cassidy said... When questioned by the stewards about the poor performance of $2.60 favourite Al Jameel which finished seventh of eight last Saturday, Jim Cassidy "added that he could offer no excuse for the performance of Al Jameel other than that he had ridden the horse previously and the colt has never performed for him." Jockey horse combinations certainly can be important. If you see a losing jockey replaced with a jockey who has a good winning record on the horse it can give you a clue that the trainer has either set the horse for its next race or thinks the horse is ready to win its next race. That's why the trainer has then put on a jockey he knows can win on the horse. Similarly some jockeys cannot get a horse to perform for them. If that jockey reappears on the horse you might decide that it is best not to back it and instead find a better bet in the race. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
