19/12/2003 edition What A Load Of Taurus There were some absolutely crazy results last Saturday. The most absurd was in the last at Rosehill. The 1500 metres restricted handicap was won by Terrible Taurus, $61.00, with Terrific Taurus, $61.00, finishing second. Third place went to Desert Sashay $9.00. The equal $3.00 favourites, Domielle and Sunshine Sam finished sixth and tenth respectively in the field of 13. Other favoured horses also failed to feature with Dial Tones, $5.50, finishing twelfth and Carael Boy, $6.50, ninth. It was a great result for Kembla Grange trainer Diane Poidevin-Laine, who trained the two Taurus brothers - their sire was Imposing Bull and their dam, Pretty Emma. But certainly not for most punters, who could hardly have done worse by pulling numbers out of a hat. The result was also an absolute disaster for exotics punters. Those who lost and for those who won and got big unders. On the New South Wales tote the quinella (first two in any order) paid a poor $88.80. The trifecta payout (first three in correct order) was also a shocker - just $3,288. That show exactly why you cannot beat the tote. Tote payouts always ensure a very healthy win for the tote. Tote payouts at times also bare no relation to true odds needed when these fluke results occur. It's quite possible the dividends were so poor because punters who knew little about form backed the two horses in a quinella because of their names. Their TAB numbers also did not help - winner Terrible Taurus was 13, Terrific Taurus was 7, so it was numbers punters could also include the third placegetter, Desert Sashay, number 6, in a trifecta. (6 + 7 =13.) It certainly brings racing down a level or two when you end up looking at names and numbers for explanations of tote payouts that were massive unders. I guess it can also give you hope - because those name and number punters are guaranteed long time losers. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
