Punters backing favourites had their best day of the year with an amazing six winners from the eight races. Favourites won the first four races and to put that final nail in the coffin of the bookies, favourites won the final two races of the day. It was a disaster day for the bookies with most suffering large losses.
The totes of course couldn’t care less. Unlike the bookies, the tote wins every race, no matter how popular the winning horse, no matter how much money was plunged on the winner. The tote just reduces the odds it pays you to guarantee a big win on turnover from the race. That’s also why it’s totally absurd when you hear representatives of the Racing Industry or the TABs bleating about the bookies not paying enough turnover tax and comparing bookies’ turnover tax with the turnover tax of the TABs.
The bookmaker and the tote are completely different business models. A bookmaker can have a million dollars wagered on a race and lose a lot of money if the heavily backed favourite wins. The tote can have a million dollars wagered on that same race and will always guarantee a nice profit – about $160,000. The more money wagered on the winner the less the tote decides to pay everyone who backed it, no matter how generous the odds might have looked when you backed it. Now imagine if a bookie tried to do that to you!!
