19/9/2003 edition Horse Racing Betting Tips Gai Waterhouse - "good things" It can sometimes be tough going when leading trainers dominate races with multiple entries like Gai Waterhouse (and John Hawkes) often do in Sydney. Have you noticed when their favoured horse loses to one of their lesser lights? Last Saturday in a Group 2 1300 metres handicap at Sydney the Gai Waterhouse trained Grand Armee was solidly backed from $3.20 to $2.60 in the field of eight. Like numerous Gai Waterhouse trained "money" horses it didn't win and finished second. 4YO gelding Fiery Venture, which was first up, won. Fiery Venture started at $10.00 and paid up to $10.70 on the tote. The gelding was Gai Waterhouse's other runner in the race. Private Steer It's interesting to note that Private Steer, sent out as $3.10 second favourite to Grand Armee, finished sixth of the eight runners. She pulled up sore. In Friday's Daily Telegraph an article mentioned that Private Steer needed to pass a veterinary inspection on course before being allowed to compete in the race as she had quartered her off-fore heel. Trainer John O’Shea had asked the stewards' for permission to tape the mare’s heel. Makes you wonder whether many punters took notice of that information. John Hawkes first up longshots After Adolescence $68.00 won first up at Flemington on September 6, John Hawkes backed up with another big first up winner the following week. Youth won the 1200 metres Group 3 C. S. Hayes Stakes at Moonee Valley and paid up to $22.90 on the tote. The gelding was not that difficult to rate a strong winning chance either. He entered the race with two wins from four starts, having won two races on end at Flemington before being spelled in June. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
