18/3/2006 edition Roman Arch $61.10 So another Australian Cup meeting has come and gone. In addition to the one million dollars Group 1 Weight for Age Australian Cup, the one million dollars Group 1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200 metres and the $750,000 3YO Group 1 Australian Guineas over 1600 metres were the other main betting attractions for the day. Your average punter, encouraged to be part of the action, bet up and got wiped out. Lad Of The Manor was heavily backed from $2.80 to start at $2.40 in the Australian Cup. He finished fifth of the 12 runners. Second favourite Our Smoking Joe, $4.40, finished third. In the Australian Guineas, God's Own started at $1.85. He finished fifth of the nine runners. The race was won by Apache Cat, $8.00, who was fourth in the betting. The $4.20 Newmarket favourite, Rewaaya, finished ninth of 14. Second favourite, Glamour Puss finished equal fourth. The race was won by Takeover Target, $5.50, who was third in the betting. How did other favourites go? Swinging Bachelor, $3.60 - 4/7 Byway, $1.85 - 1/11. Wow. Now how generous was that? Second favourite, Shadoways, $6.50, finished fifth. Satin Robes, $3.70 - 2/7. Second favourite, Follow The Till, $4.40, finished fifth. Activation, $4.20 - 4/14. Second favourite, Cocinero, $6.50, finished eleventh. Maxerelle, $6.50 - 4/15. Second favourite, Hollow Bullet, $8.00, finished ninth. Botero, $3.60 - 8/11. This 5YO gelding, with just seven wins from 38 starts, was plunged from $4.60 by punters desperate to get out for the day. They should never have got in! In this race at least the second favourite, Hassle, $6.00, won. With numerous casual punters also betting all day so as to be part of the action you can bet your bottom dollar the most popular horses will be significantly under the odds and offer very poor value in relation to their winning chances. If you must bet on these big race days it pays to think outside the square. Take on the favourites, no matter what good things they appear to be. Remember - there are plenty of other horses apart from the obvious favourites that have also been set to win races that day! This edition of Punt to Win: 2005 Melbourne Cup Carnival Winners
