17/5/2002 edition Betting Tips Do small fields increase your odds? I couldn't help but laugh when hearing a promotion for betting on the greyhounds the other day. The betting myth we heard was because there are "only eight starters you've got the odds in your favour." That is mathematical gobbeldygook. Do the TABs and bookies all lose on the dogs because the odds are against them? Just ask all the punters who regularly lose money backing dogs whether they think the odds are in their favour. 1. You cannot bet seriously with the bookmakers - why do they bother turning up when you have markets of 180%. 2. The tote pools are too small to accommodate decent bets. 3. Because the tote pools are so small you have no idea what price you are getting. 4. Because there are only eight runners combined with small tote pools it is much more difficult to get value tote combinations overlooked by the other punters in trifectas - you will usually get well under the true odds. Conclusion: This edition of Punt to Win: You Need Top Odds It
is just about impossible to get a high enough
strike rate backing short priced tote favourites
and the poor value tote horses to make up for
the big unders on the tote. Remember
short priced tote favourites
