17/1/2003 edition Betting Tips Should 8YOs be backed first up? Last Saturday at Caulfield, in the Group 3 Weight for Age Rubiton Stakes, run over 1100 metres, 8YO gelding Fritz resumed from a break of nearly three months. Tipsters and punters were confident, because the gelding had always raced well fresh and had an excellent first up record of four wins and a second from five starts. The gelding was sent out at the short odds of $4.20. Fritz flopped badly and finished last of the seven runners, five lengths from the winner Super Elegant. As horses get older they are less likely to run well fresh. Fritz was a huge risk first up. Many 8YOs are not even spelled in case they lose form, never to regain it when they come back to racing. Their trainers just keep racing them with brief freshen ups. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
