Betting Market Odds

Who do the Adelaide bookmakers expect to bet with them?

Sure enough, those Adelaide bookmakers, were at it again last Saturday. Look at the starting price percentages for each race. Did they want punters to bet with them? Who would want to take these sort of odds?

Let's see what a market of around 130% does to roulette so you can better understand how unfair it is for horse racing.

Instead of getting even money ($2.00) for red or black you will now get odds on, 1/2 ( $1.50). That means if you put $10.00 on red and you win instead of making $10.00 profit you will only make $5.00 profit.

Very poor, isn't it?

If you back a single number instead of being paid 35/1 ($36.00) when you win you will be paid 24/1 ($25.00). It means with a $10.00 bet you will collect $250 instead of $360!

Very poor, isn't it?

Our suggestion is if you are at the track and bookmakers serve up tight markets, tell the bookmakers you are not betting into markets at such high percentages and actively encourage other punters to do the same.

Also, if you are not at the track and are putting on a starting price bet with a bookmaker, we suggest you give either:

1. Minimum odds needed for the bet to go ahead - any old starting price cannot do. Particularly when you look at what is going on in Adelaide racing.

2. Alternatively, give a minimum starting price market percentage as a condition for your bet. For example 110% or maybe 115%. With starting price markets like 136% at Cheltenham last Saturday, there was a very good chance that every starting price on offer for every horse was a long term losing bet.

Many New South Wales, Victorian and Darwin bookmakers are very competitve now. It is possibible to obtain top official betting ring fluctuation and give minimum odds needed for the bet to go ahead. That is far better than taking starting price odds.

The big advantage you have over bookmakers is that you do not have to bet. If you cannot get competitive prices for intelligent punting then let them know.

Warning
Short Priced Tote Favourites

These are losing bets.
Look at the table below and see the percentages lost backing short priced tote favourites compared with bookmaker betting ring prices.

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites to make up for the big unders on the tote.
If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.
