16/8/2002 edition Spring Carnival Horses The class horses are resuming. It is important to get very generous odds about any backed first up. Some of the stars from last year's Spring Carnival and this year's Autumn Carnivals will not perform well this time in. You do not know that when backing them first up. That is why you must obtain very generous odds. Some of the horses will also not be primed to run a big first up run, with their main targets being richer pickings well down the track. Last weekend Calaway Gal, this year's Golden Slipper winner was backed solidly into $3.00 at Randwick. She finished seventh of eight. Poor betting odds - too forgiving It is advisable not to be too forgiving about horses' finishing well down the track, even if there is bad luck in the running. Take the case of Malo last Saturday at Randwick. This John Hawkes trained 4YO gelding was one of many horses taken by Hawkes from Sydney to Melbourne in July in his bid to win the Victorian Trainers' Premiership. Malo perfomed poorly in Melbourne, failing in his first run on a Heavy track, followed by finishing fourteenth of fifteen at Caulfield on July 20 after having bad luck in the run, including striking interference shortly after the jump and again at the 200 where the gelding was tightened for room. However, to some observers, despite the bad luck, the horse just gave up. The "common knowledge" though was that Malo would perform much better in Sydney racing clockwise and back on firm tracks. With that "common knowledge" he was sent out a short $2.20 favourite at Randwick last Saturday. Someone forgot to tell the horse. Malo finished eight in a field of 10.
