15/10/2004 edition 2YO Races Betting Tips Last Saturday at Rosehill the meeting started with a 2YO Open run over 1100 metres. In the small field of seven only one starter, Fuhrmidable had raced before. That was beaten nearly 10 lengths two weeks earlier. Based on trial form the Gerald Ryan trained colt Ping Ming was sent out at prohibitive odds - a $1.70 favourite. Ping Ming didn't know that and finished last, beaten by more than eight lengths. The winner, Vigoria, paid $17.60 on the New South Wales tote. Vigoria had also been well beaten by Ping Ming in a trial 11 days earlier. So much for that trial form. Fuhrmidable also finished second. So much for for that colt's first start thrashing. There was also a 2YO Colts and Geldings Open run over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm. In this race there was a field of 15 first starters. Again a Gerald Ryan trained colt, Momfasa, was sent out at the short odds - a $2.00 favourite. Momfasa finished a well beaten thirteenth. The winner, Stakeholder paid $9.30. The second and third placegetters started at $21.00 and $61.00 respectively. Last week in Punt to Win we wrote about 2YO races and concluded with: "When betting in these 2YO races: The first rule, despite what everyone tells you, is that following the betting ring money is absolutely useless. Substantial bets on unraced horses, when you do not know the true race form for the other runners is nothing more than "wealthy mug money". If you must bet in these races place very small win bets on horses around $20+ who have top trainers or jockeys or good trial form. They are probably just as likely to win than the "wealthy mug money" supported horses." This edition of Punt to Win: Best Tote Odds?
