15/8/2003 edition Jockey Watch Michael Rodd One of the key attributes of class jockeys is knowing the ability of the horses they have under them. How often have you seen two jockeys fighting for the lead, lengths ahead of the field, only for both their horses to finish well down the track? Well, it didn't happen last Saturday in the San Domenico Stakes. Michael Rodd rode the Magic Millions winner Regimental Gal in the 1000 metres 3YO Group 2 set weights event at Randwick last Saturday. He positioned the filly outside the $1.45 favourite, Spark Of Life, and really served it up to the gelding as they led the other seven runners by six lengths running record times. Michael Rodd knew what he was doing, unlike many inferior jockeys who destroy their mounts' winning chances. Regimental Gal hit the clear lead early in the home straight, kept finding and won going away by 2.5 lengths in race record time of only 56.96 seconds. Corey Brown also knew that Spark Of Life was a very smart galloper. Despite the hectic pace and getting no peace in the lead, Spark Of Life did not fold up and run down the track, as so often happens. Spark Of Life still finished second, ahead of plenty of classy gallopers. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
