Punt to Win |

Reenact - betting plunge astray From 23 starts Reenact had three wins and another three paltry placings. We were prepared to place a small bet on Reenact - at $8.00, just on the offchance that the horse might repeat his fluke previous run where he won by over four lengths. We were never in the ballpark. All those supposed winning punters with inside knowledge and big wallets backed Reenact on track from $3.80 to $3.00 favourite in the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby. This three year old money muncher was even shorter at $2.80 on SuperTab. Never mind that the colt had barrier 14. Never mind that the colt was going to settle well back in the 20 horse field and need luck in running. It must go down as one of the worst bets of the day. Victorian visitor De Gaulle Lane, has been winning convincingly in Brisbane and had a strike rate of five wins from 10 starts. None of Reenact's convictions. He was an on pace runner perfectly drawn in barrier 4 with a class jockey in Brett Prebble. He was allowed to start at $9.00. He won the race by nearly five lengths. An amazing achievement How did Gold Coast trainer Gerald Ryan do it? At Eagle Farm three year old filly Gilded Wings dropped back in distance from 2020 metres to 1200 metres with only a four weeks' break. She won and paid $10.70 It pays to keep a black book where you make a note of amazing achievements like that by trainers. Just like horses they are "creatures of habit". You will be surprised how often this will help you find some excellent value winners. Tote punters lose out Our Mick convincingly won at Eagle Farm. On the New South Wales tote he paid a paltry $2.10 compared to $2.80 in the bookmakers' betting ring. With a $100 bet you won $110 on the tote compared to $180 with the bookmakers. You cannot afford to put yourself at such a disadvantage. Secret Haze never seen Couldn't believe it. This filly had only three wins from 16 starts. She also had barrier nine in the nine horse field. Yet she was sent out as the best of good things in the 1450 metres 3YO Open at Cheltenham. She started at $1.60. That means you need close to a 65% winning strike rate just to break even. From her wide barrier she settled well back last and never looked a winning chance. She ran on for a comfortably held second. Next page
