Saturday, June 9 Romilada flops This talented three year old gelding had six wins and two placings from only nine starts in South Australia. On May 24 he convincingly won a Listed race carrying 54.5kg. He was brought to Melbourne for a 3YO Listed Handicap over 1200 metres at Flemington. He was plunged in the betting ring fron $4.00 to $2.80 (3/1 to 7/4!). Romilada was beaten by over nine lengths. Jockey Nash Rawiller said Romilada never felt comfortable at any stage of the race. Maybe being checked at the 800 by Mr. Magoo had something to do with it. More likely was the top weight of 58kg. against some smart three year olds. Romilada had absolutely bolted in a race at Cheltenham with 58kg. (it was a pretty ordinary six horse affair). Once again the dangers about taking short odds on horses rising significantly in the weights meant punters losing their money. What was even more amazing in the race was the price available on the winner, Mr. Royston. He had five wins from 16 starts and had convincingly won his last two starts in New Zealand by four lengths and nearly three lengths. Yet he started at $21.00 and paid up to $25.60 on the tote. Mr. Royston wasn't tipped in the racing media. One media tipster even dismissed Mr. Royston by saying most New Zealanders are flops when they come here. Is he really taking close notice of how the New Zealanders perform when they race here? Gold Crystal - not for punters At their last starts 19 days ago in a Listed Handicap Gold Crystal carried 54kg. and beat The Ex Files who carried 53kg. by three lengths. They met again in a pretty ordinary 1800 metres, seven horse affair at Cheltenham on Saturday. Gold Crystal rose in weight to 57kg. while The Ex Files dropped to 52.5kg. That is a 3.5kg. turnaround. Gold Crystal was sent out the short $2.40 favourite while $4.50 was available about The Ex Files. They had a two horse battle over the last 200 with The Ex Files winning. Be on the lookout for big weight turnarounds, especially when the poorly weighted horse is at short odds. "Brave" tote punters At Randwick in an 800 metres restricted mares plodders' race five year old Bold Defence, a last start winner, was showing a paltry $3.90 on Super Tab at the jump. This mare had a grand total of two wins from 39 starts. That she won the race is irrelevant. You won't catch long term winning punters taking those odds about a proven non-winner. Talking about plodders Provincial Plates are usually very unattractive betting affairs. The 1600 metres event held at Flemington was no different. Punters who were "brave" enough to back the winner Cotton On Flyer, a seven year old gelding who had won only seven races from 70 starts, had to make do with only $5.70 on the New South Wales tote .
