The hard betting facts

Let's start off by looking at how the favourites fared at this big betting meeting. Here are the nine favourites, their starting prices and their finishing positions.

It was a dismal day for favourites.

Snitzel at $1.50 was absurd odds in the day's feature race, the $820,000 2YO Magic Millions run over 1200 metres. In a race that is always run at a hectic pace, he started from barrier 10 in the field of 16, had a tough run and did well to finish equal third. Snitzel had also never raced at the track.

Roadagain at $1.60 was also big unders in the $820,000 2YO Magic Millions run over 1400 metres. Some punters thought this horse was as good a moral as you get in racing. Despite having barrier two, and being put nicely in the race by jockey Chris Munce, Roadagain looked under pressure as he did not handle the track. He had also never raced at the Gold Coast track.

Roadagain was also trained by Gai Waterhouse. Experience has told us to be wary of some trainers' short priced "good things". Many of Gai Waterhouse's "good things" are just not at decent value odds. We could say that in her promotion of racing Gai freely talks to the media about their winning chances. But take the betting odds on offer about many of them and long term you'll pay the penalty.
