13/9/2002 edition Trifecta Betting Tips Make trifecta money from "good things" Last Saturday Victory Vein won in Sydney and paid $1.40 for the win on the tote. Yet trifecta dividends for a dollar ranged from $236 on SuperTab to $257 on the New South Wales tote. Absolutely amazing. Now that sure beats making 40 cents profit from a one dollar bet. How is it possible to make that sort of money from "good things" winning? A look at the tote prices might give a clue. Here are the final approximates for the race from SuperTab:
The trifecta was 1 - 5 - 10. Chatelaine and Sunday Joy were both strongly favoured to place. Most punters would have them in their trifecta combinations. They both missed out. The key then is to bet differently from most punters. If you want to take a "good thing" as a standout to win then you must save money and eliminate combinations taken by most punters. However, that should only be done based on form. If you gave no other horses than Chatelaine and Sunday Joy much chance of placing, then it follows you should leave the race alone. Taking the popular way - Victory Vein to win with Sunday Joy and Chatelaine to place and you'd be lucky to make a dollar. The outlay would have been $90 for a nice profit. However, this method loses long term because you are including many poor value combinations and combinations with virtually no chance of coming in. The way to treat a race with a "good thing" as a standout bet for a trifecta and give yourself a chance of making money long term is by finding horses to run second and third that you are believe are realistic place chances and most other punters will have dismissed. Our Pro-Punter ratings for the race had Lavishly equal third rated and Royal Purler fifth rated, only about two lengths from the winner, Victory Vein. That was an excellent leg up for any of our members who use "good things" as trifecta standouts with other sensible combinations for second and third that are dismissed by most punters.
