Gai Waterhouse - optimistic punters

Not only John Hawkes, but also Gai Waterhouse trained "good things" have a nasty habit of leaving punters' money in the bookies' bags and totes.

Last Saturday Disney Dollars was backed in on track from $3.20 to $2.80 in a restricted affair at Randwick. He was resuming from a five months' spell over 1300 metres. He did win three races in a row last time in, but his overall record of four wins and three places from 19 starts is nothing to brag about.

You certainly don't want to take skinny odds about horses with records like that.

Disney Dollars was given every chance by apprentice Robbie Brewer, but weakened over the last 100 metres. He clearly needed the run.

Adelaide plodders again

The 2600 metres plodders' affair at Morphettville was won by four year old gelding Risky Venture $30.40. At his previous start he was beaten by 12 lengths, and that is just as likely to happen at his next start. He had managed three wins and eight places from 30 starts.

The $2.80 favourite was eight year old gelding Imperial Cross, a veteran of 79 starts with 13 wins. Yet he was sent out a good thing.

Chekwenya impressive

This Gary Kennewell trained three year old gelding certainly looks the goods in Adelaide.

He backed up last Saturday after a tough win the week before, went up in weight to 57.5kg. and up in distance from 1000 metres to 1200 metres for the first time. Despite that he won, and won well, his fourth win from seven starts.

Starting price of $3.00 was not overly generous. You will find considerably less than one in three horses win who back up in a week, rise in weight to 57.5kg. and go to 1200 metres for the first time.
