13/2/2004 edition Lonhro Is A Champion Trainer John Hawkes has set this outstanding 5YO son of Octagonal for another big campaign. Lonhro returned from a spell last Saturday and won the Group 1 C. F. Orr Stakes over 1400 metres at Caulfield. Lonhro looked in trouble, but like great horses, found something extra under pressure and in a driving finish just defeated Vocabulary, Sound Action and Super Elegant. It was Lonhro's ninth Group 1 win. The 5YO horse has a champion's strike rate in the best company - 23 wins, two seconds and two thirds from just 31 starts. Lonhro has been dismissed as "just a very good horse" because of his failure to win a Cox Plate. But he was beaten less than a length in last year's Cox Plate. Lonhro is a long striding galloper. The unique features of Moonee Valley racetrack, where the Cox Plate is held, have worked against Lonhro. It is a narrow, tight turning track on an unusual racing surface - StrathAyr - with a very short home straight. It has also been argued that Lonhro doesn't run time. His winning time on Saturday was pretty impressive. It was 1:21.97 which is only 0.77 seconds outside the track record. Lonhro looks set in his last campaign to once again rack up a string of wins before going to stud. Only after he retires will some of his detractors, when they look back, realise what an outstanding horse Lonhro was. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
