A solidly backed favourite in the big Group 1 race of the day. Grand Armee, who had to carry top weight of 59.5kg., in 23 previous starts had not raced once on a Heavy rated track. At Flemington he was given a perfect run on the pace by Damien Oliver, but folded badly in the straight and was beaten by over six lengths. Oliver told stewards that when put under pressure on the home turn Grand Armee did not handle the track conditions.

Another winner for favourite punters. But this time they were backing a 4YO gelding who had raced four times on Heavy rated tracks for two wins and a second.

This 6YO gelding had raced 37 times for six wins, and six placings. However on Heavy rated tracks from just 10 starts he had three wins and four placings. At Flemington he was beaten by nearly six lengths. On the home turn he was bumped twice, becoming unbalanced and hampered. The guilty jockey, Rhys McLeod, was suspended.

Another proven wet tracker, this 5YO gelding had raced four times on Heavy tracks for one win, two seconds and a third. He just missed out by a nose at Flemington. The winner, Cahuita, had raced once on a Heavy rated track at Caulfield in May where he overcame being held up for a run to win the $100,000 race.
