The Expat flops

There was a huge media wrap for this promising Gerald Ryan trained three year old gelding in the second, a 3YO Class 6, at Eagle Farm.

The Expat again had a bad barrier, but that hadn't stopped him at his previous start. He also rose by 2.5kg. to 55kg. Punters who took the short odds were on good terms with themselves as he sat on the pace, travelling comfortably, and then took the lead in the straight and looked home. However he hit the proverbial brick wall, couldn't lift his feet over the last 100 and didn't even run a place.

The winner was Hoo Ha who paid an amazing $25.80 on the New South Wales tote. Talk about punters having blinkers. How could they dismiss this three year old?

Three starts ago he won a Toowoomba maiden by over four lengths. At his previous start he won a Toowoomba Class1 in smart time by nine lengths. He even dropped in weight at Eagle Farm and gained the services of top jockey Stathi Katsidis.

3200 metres is tough

Even with the John Size magic, Touch The Groom at $5.00 was a poor value bet in the Rosehill 2400 metres Listed Lord Mayor's Cup last Saturday.

Only one week earlier he had a very tough run in the 3200 metres Sydney Cup. Have a look at horses who run in the 3200 metres Melbourne Cup. They invariably flop if raced shortly after. The Sydney Cup is no different.

What was amazing was that Touch The Groom loomed up to challenge at the home turn and under hard riding battled on strongly the entire straight for third, beaten by about a length.
