11/4/2003 edition Helsinborg $27.40 Wins Last week we wrote about the two trainers who dominate Sydney racing, John Hawkes and Gai Waterhouse: "Have you noticed how often the betting public gets it wrong when these trainers have more than one runner in a race? Invariably their short priced favourites are beaten by another one of their runners at comparatively good odds." We then pointed out how the John Hawkes' trained Gabfest finished eighth as $3.20 favourite while in the same race the John Hawkes' trained Bradshaw won, specked on track from $14.00. Well, it happened again last Saturday. The John Hawkes' trained Salgado was sent out at the short odds of $2.70 in a Rosehill Listed Handicap with 13 runners and finished fourth. Salgado got shuffled back on the home turn and was also held up in the straight. By the time the gelding was clear the race was pretty much over. But the John Hawkes' trained Helsinborg won, started at $21.00 and paid a tote dividend up to $27.40. We will not take short odds about horses when a trainer has other runners in the same race. For our premium betting information we liked Salgado, but at $6.00, not $2.70. We also liked Helsinborg at $27.40. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
