Punt to Win |

11/1/2002 edition Two Year Olds Two year old trials The Sportsman's excellent writer and form analyst Andre Kassay made some very good points in last Friday's edition. Here is what he wrote: "Hands up to everyone who is sick to death of juvenile or first starters (especially Melbourne or Adelaide) saluting week in week out without an official trial run. It's a pet hate with punters to hear that the impressive debut winner had won two jumpouts when they pick up the Sunday papers. Ultimately we would like to see all first starters have to trial officially. There's no compulsion to try but at least we get a good feel for the horse. If you don't want to have your juvenile show its hand then the option is to run it away from the metro area, back it, win and then bring it to town as a horse with form. This might be a nice boost for two-year-old events in the country where plunge-orientated stables, without knowledge of their rivals can suffer what metro punters cop all the time." I fully agree. All unraced horses in the city should have official trial form. Even if you don't try in a trial - why do Hawkes' horses regularly finish down the track then come out and win? - it won't do an unraced two year old any good to be restrained in a trial. They just get out and run! Racing is all about betting turnover. To be honest punters as a group have only themselves to blame for city races being held full of horses with no disclosed form. If punters refused to bet in these races instead of "having a go, something's got to win" turnover would be so small the situation would quickly be remedied. Instead punters are advised by most in the media to follow the money in these races. The simple fact is "plunge-orientated stables, without knowledge of their rivals" get regularly taken to the cleaners in city races and the punters who follow the money take even shorter odds before they get wiped out. Either boycott these races or place much smaller bets and insist on very generous odds about anything you like. You have to compensate for the no disclosed form, danger factor. Next
