10/5/2002 edition Media Hype Horses There were plenty of hype horses last Saturday. Our Kazz with Damien Oliver to ride was a "certainty" to win a 3YO listed race over 2000 metres at Victoria Park on the way to their Derby. Punters thought the paltry $1.80 was too generous and so backed the gelding into $1.60. There's a good analogy here with the stockmarket. The smart money buys the shares before the good news and sells on its announcement as the public clamour to buy. The smart money was actually on Our Kazz, a visitor from New Zealand, when with Damien Oliver riding, he won the Port Adelaide Guineas two weeks earlier starting at $11.00. That money was not interested at $1.80 or $1.60. As we regularly point out on this site, one way to win at racing is by backing horses before everyone else is told how good the horses are. You just have to be a step ahead. What about the hype for the Gai Waterhouse trained Arlington Road? The gelding only had to turn up to win the Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm after convincingly winning a Group race by over three lengths at his previous start at Randwick three weeks earlier. As a result Arlington Road was sent out at the short odds of $3.00 in the field of 19. There's no way punters will stay ahead of the game backing media hype horses at those odds in big fields. Being trained by Gai Waterhouse just helped shorten the odds even more - she always makes herself available to the horse racing media and has no qualms about telling them how wonderful her horses are doing and how spot on they are for their races.
