Derby Day:

The Derby was touted as a match race between Ustinov and Viscount. It's the first time three year olds race over 2500 metres and the race has a history of producing upset results.

The John Hawkes trained Viscount had run a massive race in the Cox Plate for a close, very unlucky third. On pure ratings figures alone he should have been too good in the Derby, back to his own age group and at set weights. However the Cox Plate had taken its toll. It was asking too much of the colyt to back up in a week. He started at $3.20 in the Derby and ran a lucklustre seventh.

Ustinov who started the short priced $2.35 favourite, got well out of his ground and never looked like winning. He ran on for fourth.

Damien Oliver pulled the right reins, stuck with Amalfi who he had won on two weeks earlier and won again preventing another absolute boilover in the Derby. Zarek $61.00 and a maiden after 13 starts was beaten by a bob of the head. Interestingly, he was only beaten four lengths by Amalfi two weeks earlier at Caulfield.

Defeats by three or four lengths are turned around much more often than the punting public seems to accept. You will often find the winner well in the market, the loser by a few lengths an absolute outsider given virtually no chance when the horses meet again. You can take advantage of this, especially when there is a turnaround in the weights.

In a wide open, 16 horse field, Group 1 1200 metres Handicap down the Flemington straight, Camena was sent out the $4.00 favourite. She had been plunged from $6.00.

She ran a huge race and finished third, beaten by a bob of the head. But let's face it, in an absolute raffle race, even the $6.00 was under the odds. There was only 1.6 lengths between first and ninth!

Sudurka, who has ability but doesn't always show it, won at $21.00.

My .....selection method used for small bets produced 6 winners from 21 bets across the country for the day. The winners were All Courage $25, Quays $19, Slick Operator $8, La Bella Dama $60, Varicool $11 and Mossiton $7.

A return of 130 units on an outlay of 21 units was simply an awesome result ! Small bets on these allowed me to end the day well in front for what was a difficult day for the punter - especially in Melbourne.
