Feature Handicaps Horse Racing Betting Odds

Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup betting

Spring is here and with it comes the excitement of the big feature races in Melbourne such as the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

Thousands of punters are going to be placing bets in these races - often a month or more before the race starts.

However, it's often hard enough backing a winner when your horse gets a run in a big feature race and if scratched at the barriers you get a full refund of your bet. So why back horses months or weeks before the feature races? When there's no refund if your horse does not start!!

Because you get good odds? Just work out the betting market percentages that are not around 110% but hundreds of per cent. So you'll realise that getting "good odds" by betting early is a complete myth.

Is it important to know whether your horse can handle rain affected going? So why back a horse days before the race?

How often do we find punters back a horse as favorite for a feature race like the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup only to find that the horse doesn't even start in the race? Horses get injured or lose form. Everyone who backed that horse has lost their money without even getting a run.

Our advice is to never back a horse to win a race unless you are guaranteed a full refund of your bet should your horse be scratched. That of course also rules out betting on the feature doubles weeks and months before the races are run.
