8/3/2002 edition Smart Horse Trainer Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy knows jockeys Last Saturday at Caulfield leading hoop Scott Seamer jumped off Dash For Cash to ride Barkada in the $400,000 Group 1 Futurity Stakes. Dash For Cash's trainer Rick Hore-Lacy is not stupid. He was reported in last Friday's Sportsman as saying: "I'm relying on the fact that jockeys are renowned bad judges in these matters." How right he was. Dash For Cash, with Kerrin McEvoy taking the ride, won while Barkada, the $3.00 favourite finished fifth, beaten nearly three lengths. Race calling hype It is very easy to get influenced by the hype of race callers in the heat of the race. Be aware of that so it does not adversely affect your betting. For example last Saturday in the $200,000 Group 2 St. George Stakes at Caulfield Northerly was involved in a tough battle up the straight against Old Comrade and Piper Star. After being briefly headed Northerly won, but finished less than a length ahead of them. The race caller excitedly called out "Northerly blows them away." Hardly. It was a very tough battle to win. to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites
and the poor value tote horses to make up for the big unders on
the tote. Did you back any of these winners recently?
