8/3/2002 edition Doncaster Handicap Betting Feature race betting It's often hard enough backing a winner when your horse gets a run in the race and if scratched at the barriers you get a full refund of your bet. So why back horses days before the races? Such as in the Doncaster Handicap which will be run on March 30. Last week the John Hawkes' trained Lonhro was quoted at the very short odds of only $6.00. Equal favourite with Sunline and Ha Ha. Lonhro is now under medication. As a result his autumn campaign has ended. Everyone who backed him in the Doncaster Handicap has lost without even getting a run for their money. Our advice is to never back a horse to win a race unless you are guaranteed a full refund of your bet should your horse be scratched. That of course also rules out betting on the feature doubles. Your horse fails to complete a jump. We were absolutely stunned to see Mascagni sent out as $1.45 favourite against the other eight runners in a 2800 metres hurdle at Victoria Park last Saturday. Mascagni put in a few ordinary jumps, lost lengths, but rallied to finish second, beaten nearly four lengths by Star Games. Ten days earlier Mascagni had beaten Star Games by nearly 12 lengths. That's jumps racing. Next
