8/2/2002 edition Betting Myths 2. It's best to stop betting for the day when bad luck strikes At Moonee Valley on Saturday in the fourth race of the day, a 3YO Open over 1519 metres, $9.00 chance Careyes had, depending on your point of view, some bad luck. The colt missed the start and in a fighting finished shied and dislodged jockey Steven Vella centimetres before the finishing line. As a result, stewards deemed that Careyes had failed to finish the race. The Herald Sun's Shane Templeton, in his column "The Pocket Talking", Monday, February 4, 2002, gave his readers a punting "lesson": "If you are involved in a Careyes-type debacle, accept that this is not your day and stop punting." We assume that these punting lessons are not given tongue in cheek by Templeton. They are seriously meant to help the punter. So all we have to say is that sensible punters are not superstitious. 3. Follow the market for the unraced horses That does not make you money long term. For example, the first 2YO race at Flemington last Sunday was won by the unraced It's Who Deanie - $29.30. Then an hour later the 2YO Listed race was won by the unraced Took A Chance $99.90. Next

to make up for the big unders on the tote. Did you back any of these winners recently?
