7/11/2003 edition Makybe Diva's Melbourne Cup Five year old mare Makybe Diva, $8.00, finished too strongly to comfortably win the $4,150,000 Melbourne Cup by 1.25 lengths from $41.00 outsider She's Archie, with Jardines Lookout, $41.00, third, three lengths further back in the field. Once again Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon form has held up. Makybe Diva was a very unlucky fourth in the Caulfield Cup, just 1.2 lengths behind Mummify. Zagalia and Grey Song, who also put in big Caulfield Cup runs finished fifth and sixth, while Pentastic followed up his fantastic Mackinnon run on Saturday by finishing fourth. She's Archie finished a strong second in this year's Geelong Cup. Following Damien Oliver's Melbourne Cup win last year on Media Puzzle who won the Geelong Cup, you can bet that the top finishers in next year's Geelong Cup will be taken more seriously than She's Archie was this year. It seems all the money in the world is not helping the Godolphin Stable get a Cup winner. Mamool $6.50 favourite and ridden by Frankie Dettori, did not have a lead up run here. The 5YO horse finished a distant 35 lengths last. Frankie Dettori reported that the horse felt poor on pulling up in the shoulder area. The Godolphin Stable's second string starter, Millstreet, finished 21st., more than 22 lengths from the winner. When the pace went on in the straight Millstreet just plodded to the line. Caulfield Cup winner and Mackinnon failure Mummify was sensationally scratched on the morning of the race with an elevated temperature. One again it shows the dangers of betting before official scratchings on raceday. All win bets on Mummify were lost. All doubles going into Mummify to win the Melbourne Cup were lost. Those "generous odds" about pre-race favourite Mummify don't look so good now that bets were lost without even getting a run for your money. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
