Value wrap - not for the punters, Alf Matthews

You couldn't possibly miss the huge wrap he gave Saladancer last Saturday for a Mares Open at Caulfield. According to Alf Matthews she was great value, certainly not a $20.00 chance. She'd also been beaten by five lengths two weeks earlier in a Mares restricted race!

How did Alf Matthews select that horse ahead of Donvamore who had just gone down in a similar standard race to Saturday's race, a Mares Open at Moonee Valley two weeks earlier, had Damien Oliver to ride, was well weighted and loved the wet, is beyond me.

Saladancer had every chance but folded in the straight. She ran like a $20.00 chance. Donvamore easily beat her home.

Philidor - we were right

Only the other week we told you this non-winner would be hyped up in the media, sent around at short odds at his next start and would also lose. We were right. You see, on August 18 he convincingly won at Eagle Farm as $2.25 favourite. It was his second win from 22 starts!! Prior to that win he had been sent around as beaten favourite many times.

In a 2100 metres Open at Doomben last Saturday he was the $3.00 favourite - tote punters took even shorter odds. Philidor was given every chance in the race by Michael Cahill. He had a nice sit behind Yuppie who took the field up behind the tearaway leader Maltese Beauty.

When Maltese Beauty weakened in the straight Philidor had every chance to pass Yuppie $3.50, but of course didn't.

We were very close to making Yuppie one of our bets of the day, as we gave Philidor Buckley's chance of winning. What stopped us was the small field of only six horses plus Maltese Beauty was a very real wild card. As it was, he only opened up a lead of about eight lengths. If he opened up a lead of 15 to 20 lengths, and it could have been on the cards, then if he didn't win, anything chasing could have. Not our ideal betting scenario.
