7/2/2003 edition Flemington Racetrack Last Saturday in drought stricken Melbourne the VRC's Flemington racetrack was rated Good. Excellent. Ready for an interesting Saturday's racing on an even surface giving every horse a fair chance. Wrong. The warning signs were there. For one, the rail was out 10 metres. Then the penetrometer readings on Saturday morning were Inside 4.32, Outside 4.25 - not a big difference, and often irrelevant, but it could mean that the outside section of the track was faster than the inside. Come the races and Flemington served up yet another day of racing severely affected by track bias. There was a fast lane near the rails. It was so clearly evident that by the time of the day's main race, the 3YO Group 3 over 1420 metres, touted as a match race between boom Sydney colt Thorn Park and flying Melbourne filly Innovation Girl that Thorn Park, who started at $3.00, has to be a candidate for one of the worst bets of the year. Thorn Park, a noted backmarker, was going to have his work cut out catching Innovation Girl on a fair racing surface. On a leaders' track he had no chance, which probably explains why he didn't make up much ground when taken wide in the straight by Darren Beadman to make his run home. Not only did we have a biased leaders' track. The eighth
race of the day, was the Listed Kensington Stakes run over the 1100 metres
of the infamous Flemington straight. Look at how the barrier draw affected the final results. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
