6/6/2003 edition Eagle Farm Carnival As usual, most punters are finding the Carnival very tough going. Is it any wonder? The races are tough, wide open and generally poor betting affairs. Then throw in terrible Brisbane bookmaker betting markets or tote markets of 120% and punters are guaranteed to be on the back foot. Have a look at some of last Saturday's results. To start with, from the eight races not one favourite won. Only two favourites even managed to run a place. Zagalia, a filly with minimal form, won the $325,000 2400 metres 3YO Fillies Group 1 Queensland Oaks. She started at $21.00 and won by two lengths. Favourite The Jewel, even money, finished second. It's also asking for trouble taking those odds in a field of 16 runners. John Hawkes bobbed up with another big winner when Ambulance, $26.00, won 1400 metres 2YO Group 1 Sires' Produce Stakes. At least you could find some merit in Ambulance, a convincing winner over 1650 metres in a 2YO Listed race at Flemington 20 days earlier. John Hawkes also had the $7.00 second favourite in the race, Bushland, who finished third. When a trainer has multiple runners in a race there's got to be some merit to ignoring the trainer's most favoured runner and putting your hard earned on the trainer's other runners at odds. It just seems to happen so often that the roughies get up. In the same race yet another short priced Gai Waterhouse trained runner bit the dust - Shamekha, the ridiculously priced $3.00 favourite finished thirteenth of 14.
