Sunline Wins Doncaster

Sunline too good

What a tough win by Sunline in the $2,400,000 Group 1 Doncaster Handicap at Randwick. With top weight of 58kg. she led throughout. The Gai Waterhouse trained Ha Ha, the subject of an ill-placed betting plunge from $12.00 to $7.00 sat on Sunline's girth, but when the pressure was applied weakened noticeably to finish seventh, beaten by three lengths.

But how unlucky was Shogun Lodge? The specking on track from $13.00 to $10.00 would have been spot on if he had been able to get a clear run in the straight a little earlier. Held up till the 150, Shogun Lodge was making good ground, but the post came too soon.

El Mirada who started off the track in the widest barrier, 20, put in a massive run. He settled well back in the field, was never on the track from the barrier, but still ran home strongly and finished fourth. His starting price? $81.00.

Last year, a week after the Doncaster, in the All-Aged Stakes, also over 1600 metres, he won on a heavy track with $51.00 bet, while Sunline finished third. El Mirada, who handles all track conditions, will be spot on for the race again this year.
