Wet Track Wins
The Doomben meeting on Saturday, December 30 was run on a
genuinely Heavy track. It was the first seriously rain affected track for weeks.
Let's have a look at how some of the short priced horses fared.
1. Larabia $2.80 favourite in the opening race finished second. This four
year old gelding, lightly raced with only seven starts, had never raced on a
Slow or Heavy track.
2. Royalsyn $1.80 favourite in the next race also finished second.
This three year old filly had won four of her five races, but had never raced on
a Slow or Heavy track.
3. Scarlex was sent out at $3.30 in the fourth race. He finished
second, beaten by six lengths. Scarlex had three wins and three placings from
seven starts. He had never raced on a Heavy track and his only unplaced run was
was a well beaten fifth as $2.40 favourite on a rain affected Slow track. The
danger signals are clearly there, though of course his handicap of 57.5kg. may
also have contributed to his failure.
4. Icy Pride $1.40 favourite won the fifth by 10 lengths. He had never
raced on a Slow or Heavy track. Despite the ease of his win to risk a dollar to
win 40 cents with track queries is asking for trouble.
5. Chong Tong $3.00 favourite was well beaten in the seventh race. This
two year old gelding trained by Lee Freedman had won both his starts on Good
tracks. However, he had never raced on a Slow or Heavy track.
6. Tellson $3.80 in the same race finished third. He had also won both his
starts on Good tracks. Like Chong Tong, he had never raced on a Slow or
Heavy track.
Unlike Chong Tong, he battled on gamely while showing a clear dislike for
the conditions.
7. Eminent Cheval $3.80 in the last race of the day finished a
comfortably beaten fourth. He had four wins and five placings from 13 starts.
But he only had one placing from two starts in Slow going and did finish near
last in the going, beaten by 12 lengths. He had never raced in Heavy
going.
It should be pretty clear from these examples just how risky it
is taking short odds about horses without form on Heavy tracks.
A horse that handles Dead tracks often handles Slow track conditions.
However many horses can handle Slow going but are very ordinary on Heavy tracks.
